The Green Burial Council’s work is made possible by generous, committed volunteers who believe in a more sustainable, meaningful approach to end-of-life practices. We invite you to join us in supporting this mission.
We welcome volunteers from all backgrounds and life experiences, and especially encourage participation from Indigenous Peoples, People of Color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and anyone who believes natural burial contributes to the well-being of our communities.
We’re looking for people with skills or interest in areas like administrative support, organizational operations, fundraising and grant writing, website and map maintenance, and certification review. Volunteers with backgrounds in funeral service, cemetery operations, or funeral product manufacturing are especially needed to help review applications for certification as part of our standards-based process.

Volunteer Role Listings
Location: Remote
Duration: Ongoing
Time Commitment: ~3–6 hours/month
Overview: Cemetery Certification Reviewers help the GBC ensure that cemetery applicants meet our environmental and operational standards for green burial. Volunteers in this role review application packets forwarded by the GBC’s Business Administrator and complete a standardized checklist to determine whether the provider qualifies, or the volunteer offers clear feedback for improvement. This is a low-touch, high-impact role that contributes directly to our mission. After one or two brief training video calls, the reviewer will respond to review requests via email as needed.
Responsibilities
- Review certification application materials for assigned cemetery providers
- Complete a standardized review checklist in a timely manner
- Provide feedback on missing or insufficient documentation as needed
- Follow up on revised materials (second review) if applicable
- Maintain a GBC email account for certification correspondence
- Seek support from GBC Business Administrator and/or board members
Qualifications
- Experience in the cemetery industry is essential and required
- Organized, detail-oriented, and responsive via email
- Comfortable reviewing documents such as: cemetery operations manuals, endowment fund statements, environmental impact studies, conservation easements or deed restrictions

Overview: Funeral Certification Reviewers assess whether funeral service providers meet the GBC’s criteria for environmental and operational standards. You’ll receive application packets from the Business Administrator and use a standardized checklist to approve or provide feedback to the applicant. Ideal for funeral professionals, especially those interested in the future of sustainable funeral care. This is a low-touch, high-impact role that contributes directly to our mission. After one or two brief training calls, the reviewer will respond to review requests via email as needed.

- Review funeral provider applications forwarded via email
- Use the GBC’s internal checklist to assess qualifications
- Provide constructive feedback if criteria aren’t fully met
- Follow up on revisions and maintain occasional communication with Business Administrator
Qualifications
- Experience in funeral service operations required
- Licensed or former funeral directors strongly encouraged to apply
- Familiarity with: general price lists, casket/merchandise pricing, state compliance documents, and funeral home policies/procedures

Overview: Products Certification Reviewers help the GBC verify the environmental and ethical claims made by manufacturers of burial products (e.g., caskets, shrouds) and body care products (e.g., embalming alternatives, cosmetics). Volunteers assess documentation submitted by companies and complete a review checklist based on product criteria.This role suits individuals with a background in manufacturing, product design, or environmental/product compliance.
Responsibilities
- Review documentation related to green burial products
- Use the GBC’s internal checklist to assess for approval
- Provide feedback or request clarification if needed
- Occasionally complete a second review after revisions
- Maintain a GBC email for communication purposes
Qualifications
- Knowledge of product manufacturing, compliance, or sustainable product design
- Strong attention to detail and understanding of sustainable product design
- Comfortable reviewing documents such as: Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), Bills of Materials (BOM), and shipping records (e.g., carbon offset receipts)

Overview: The Donor Relations Volunteer supports the GBC’s fundraising committee by managing donor follow-up, ensuring that contributors are acknowledged, appreciated, and provided appropriate annual tax documentations. This role involves collaboration with the Business Administrator and Social Media Manager to maintain donor engagement and stewardship. It’s ideal for someone with initiative and comfort navigating evolving systems, as we are currently refining our donor operations. This volunteer will attend monthly Zoom committee meetings and may be considered for future board recruitment.
Responsibilities
- Track and follow up on donor contributions
- Collaborate with Social Media Manager on donor communications
- Work with Business Administrator to maintain accurate donor records
- Assist in developing donor engagement workflows
- Attend monthly fundraising committee meetings (via Zoom)
Qualifications
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Experience in fundraising, donor relations, or communications preferred
- Comfortable with digital tools (email, shared docs, CRM software a plus)
- Open to volunteers from various industries with transferrable skills

- Contribute ideas and strategic input to GBC’s fundraising plans
- Collaborate on donor cultivation and stewardship strategies
- Assist with planning and supporting fundraising campaigns
- Propose systems and workflows for sustainable fundraising
- Support grant writing, tracking, and oversight as needed
- Participate in reporting and fundraising data analysis
- Help define clear goals and benchmarks for fundraising success
- Attend and contribute to monthly Zoom committee meetings
Qualifications
- Background in nonprofit fundraising, development, or management
- Experience with donor cultivation, campaign planning, or grant writing
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Overview: The Governance Documentation & Policy Volunteer helps support the GBC’s Governance Committee by organizing and maintaining the organization’s key governance materials. This includes bylaws, committee charters, policies, and shared documents. The ideal volunteer is detail-oriented, systems-minded, and comfortable working with evolving/in-process operations while building frameworks that are easy to maintain long-term.
This role works closely with the current GBC board, Business Administrator, and other staff/volunteers to ensure the GBC’s digital infrastructure and governance records are streamlined, accessible, and aligned with current needs and future continuity. This is a foundational support role with the potential to shape how the GBC operates and scales over time. You’ll join a small mission-driven team and attend monthly Zoom meetings. This is an opportunity to influence the GBC’s growth and may lead to future board member recruitment.
Responsibilities
- Audit and organize governance files and folders in GBC’s shared drives
- Standardize document naming conventions, version tracking, and folder structures
- Assist in reviewing and updating key documents (bylaws, policies, charters, internal guides)
- Track document audit status (e.g., pending approval, revised, active, archived)
- Collaborate with board members, staff, and committee chairs to identify documentation needs
- Maintain clarity and consistency across all governance-related materials
- Attend monthly Governance Committee meetings via Zoom
Qualifications
- Strong organizational/administrative skills; Excellent attention to detail
- Experience with nonprofit governance, board operations, or policy documentation preferred
- Proficient in using cloud-based storage platforms (Google Drive or similar)
- Able to bring structure to complex or disorganized digital environments
- Clear communicator; able to collaborate across roles and committees
- Self-motivated and reliable, with the ability to follow through on tasks
- Comfortable handling sensitive or confidential information with discretion

Overview: The Grant Writing Volunteer helps identify and pursue grant opportunities that support the GBC’s mission. From environmental conservation to cemetery infrastructure, this role involves research, proposal drafting, and potential collaboration with other volunteers. As part of the fundraising committee, the Grant Writer attends monthly Zoom meetings and contributes to expanding the GBC’s funding capacity. This role may evolve into a Grants Manager position and carries potential for board consideration.
Responsibilities
- Research and identify grant opportunities aligned with the GBC’s mission
- Draft and refine grant proposals for submission
- Track deadlines, application requirements, and progress
- Collaborate with fundraising committee members on grant planning
- Attend monthly committee meetings (Zoom)
Qualifications
- Prior grant writing and research experience preferred
- Interest in environmental issues, deathcare, or sustainable practices
- Creative problem-solver with the ability to think strategically

Overview: Programs Committee Volunteers play a vital role in shaping and sustaining the GBC’s programming including our public-facing webinars and educational offerings for both industry professionals and the wider community. Volunteers help identify high-value guest speakers, explore new program ideas, and support logistics and scheduling alongside GBC staff and communications partners.
This is a collaborative role that blends strategy with hands-on planning and creative problem-solving. We welcome volunteers with a background in nonprofit programming, event planning, or community education (especially in the deathcare or environmental/climate advocacy fields). You’ll join a small mission-driven team and attend monthly Zoom meetings. This is an opportunity to influence the GBC’s growth and may lead to future board member recruitment.

- Help shape webinar and educational programming that reflects GBC’s mission and values
- Research and recommend high-value guest speakers for regular webinars
- Support speaker outreach, coordination, and scheduling in collaboration with GBC staff
- Assist in maintaining the programming calendar and supporting virtual event logistics
- Contribute to the development of new or expanded program ideas based on community needs
- Attend and actively participate in monthly Zoom committee meetings
Qualifications
- BExperience in nonprofit programming, education, event planning, or speaker coordination
- Familiarity with or interest in deathcare, climate advocacy, or adjacent fields is a plus

Overview: The Webinar Partnership Liaison Volunteer helps GBC identify and nurture relationships with like-minded organizations and individuals to expand our programming reach. From co-hosted webinars to shared audience-building efforts, this role supports collaborative initiatives that strengthen GBC’s impact and visibility.
You’ll work with the Programs Committee and GBC staff to identify potential partners, conduct outreach, and help shape programming opportunities that reflect GBC’s values and goals. This is a great fit for someone who enjoys networking, outreach, and thinking creatively about mutual benefit.
Responsibilities
- Identify potential organizational partners aligned with GBC’s mission
- Conduct outreach to explore shared programming or co-hosting opportunities
- Draft simple proposals or email templates for partnership use
- Maintain a list of partnership leads and status updates
- Collaborate with committee members to integrate partners into webinar planning
- Assist in developing shared promotion strategies (as needed)

Overview: The Webinar Production Support Volunteer plays a behind-the-scenes but critical role in helping GBC deliver high-quality virtual programming. Working closely with our Social Media Marketer, this volunteer provides live tech support and light production assistance during webinars; ensuring speakers, attendees, and tech platforms run smoothly.
This is an ideal role for someone who is organized, calm under pressure, and comfortable with Zoom or other webinar tools. It’s a flexible way to support the GBC’s mission-driven education work without a full committee commitment.
Responsibilities
- Serve as Zoom co-host during live webinars
- Monitor chat, Q&A, and audience interactions during sessions
- Launch polls or manage slides, as needed
- Record sessions and ensure video/audio files are saved and shared
- Support pre-webinar tech checks or rehearsals (as needed)
- Communicate with staff and speakers to troubleshoot in real time
- Represents the GBC with professionalism and warmth
Qualifications
- Comfortable with Zoom or other video conferencing platforms
- Reliable internet connection and a quiet workspace
- Organized and able to follow event run-of-show or scripts
- Calm, solution-oriented, and quick on your feet
- Prior virtual event or webinar support a plus, but not required
- Interest in GBC’s mission and public education programs
- Availability on weekday evenings
